Which vitamin c serum should you be using?

I first tried Vit-C serums several years ago but stopped only after 1 or 2 uses due to a skin irritation episode. For the longest time, I’ve wanted to look for another good brand of serum to try, but never got around to doing that. Well, not until my mother received a bottle from her friend a couple of months ago and she started using it on her face and hands.

We were both quite surprised by how effective it was, within the first few weeks the age spots on her face and hands were very much diminished and only visible close-up. We also noticed a reduction in the appearance of the fine lines around her mouth and eye area. That really got my attention!

The Serum Brand I’m Using

The original brand of serum my mum used was SkinCeuticals. I initially wanted to go for the same brand since my mum got good results using it, but I wondered whether I could get a similar product at a lower price.

Since I had an Amazon Prime account, I did some quick research on Amazon and found this brand called OZ Naturals that offered a 1 oz bottle of Vit C serum for less than $30.

To be honest, I was afraid if it could be a low quality knock-off (I tend to be very careful when buying skin care product, especially with my sensitive skin).

Anyway the customer reviews on this product appeared very positive, there were even a couple of users who had used SkinCeuticals previously and actually preferred the smell of the OZ Naturals brand. Well, at less than $30 a bottle, no harm giving it a try I thought. Anyway I could try it out on my hands before using it on my face.

Well, I’ve used it on my face for about 2 months now, and I am loving the results so far! I’ve also bought another bottle for my mum since her original bottle ran out.

My Personal Experience Using a Vit-C Serum

I am in my early thirties and I’m starting to see visible signs of aging on my face like fine lines on the forehead, jowl lines, and skin that is becoming more dull and lacking radiance compared to my younger days (yes, I know how it feels like the day when you look into the mirror and first notice that age is catching up on you…it can be somewhat depressing :(

Since my mum got good results using vitamin C, I thought I’d give it a try too. To be sure, this wasn’t my first time applying vitamin C on my face. I had tried it many years back with a popular brand, but it wasn’t a very good experience. First off, it irritated my skin somewhat – there was an itch on my forehead and jaw area. It was also a little too drying for my liking – my skin felt very tight and became a little flaky sometimes. In the end, I stopped using it after about 3 weeks.

So it was with rather low expectations that I started using the the OZnaturals serum. My first impression was that it smelled quite good (which was in line with what the other reviewers had said). I then anticipated the inevitable irritation to my skin. It didn’t happen. Now this serum was starting to get my attention. I read the product description again and realized that on top of vitamin C, it also contained hyaluronic acid, which is a very hydrating substance. I’m not totally certain, but I think it could be the hyaluronic acid that was counteracting the drying effects of vitamin C.

At the time of writing, I have been using the serum for about 2 months, applying it every morning. The most obvious effect is the glow on my face, which just seems so much more radiant than before. Furthermore, my skin seems to be suppler now, and the fine lines on my face also appear less obvious. Overall, I’m quite happy with the results and I will continue to monitor and report any significant developments or observation.

Remember to Keep your Serum out of the Sun!

Vitamin C has anti-oxidant properties (good for anti aging, to put it simply). That means that they are easily oxidized themselves, and can lose their active properties when exposed to sunlight and air. Make sure you cap your serum tightly after use, and store them in a cool, dark place! If you notice that your serum is changing color, it may have been oxidized.

Other Facts About Vitamin C

Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid. The active ingredient used in Vit C Serums is a special form of ascorbic acid known as L-ascorbic acid.

Research has suggested that L-ascorbic acid is a powerful antioxidant that can prevent UV damage and stimulate the production of collagen in the skin. Think of collagen as the gel that holds skin tissues together. As we age, collagen production s reduced, and our skin gradually loses suppleness.

Other Active Ingredients that Enhance C Serums

Here are some other common active ingredients that are added to C serums to enhance their effectiveness. Depending on your skin type, not all active ingredients are suitable for your skin.

  • Hyaluronic acid: This is a very potent moisturizer that thoroughly hydrates the skin; adding it to vitamin C can reduce their dehydrating effect on the skin.
  • Vitamin E: Vitamin E is another powerful antioxidant that can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also offers protection against sun-damage. Adding it to the serum can also stabilize it and prolong its shelf life. However, do note that Vitamin E may not be suitable if you have oily or acne prone skin as it may worsen outbreaks.
  • Ferulic Acid: This is another ingredient that also acts as an antioxidant and is usually derived from plant sources. Another substance that can combat aging, Ferulic Acid also helps stabilize vitamin C and prevent them from being oxidized too fast.
